Accuracy of Pregnancy Test

Accuracy of Pregnancy Test is not determined very easily. A lot of steps have to be followed so that one is able to get error free results of pregnancy test. But it is recommended always to confirm the results with a doctor.

Pregnancy test which is carried out at home looks for the hormone HCG in urine of the female who is going for the test. Similarly the tests carried out by the doctors in the laboratory try to detect the similar hormone in the blood of the female. HCG is found in the female placenta which secretes progesterone which is needed for the growth of the embryo.

Some time is required before the HCG hormone builds up in the body of the woman therefore it is advisable that some time is given before taking the pregnancy test. For some women it may take longer and in others it does not take much of time. Therefore some women get result even if they conduct the pregnancy test earlier whereas for some at least a time of seven days is given after missing the period.

Tests conducted in a doctor's chamber give more effective results. In many cases it has been seen that a home based pregnancy test gives a negative result whereas the same test in the doctor's clinic gives a positive result. Sometimes Planned Parenthood Offices too conduct pregnancy test.

The scanner or the process of ultrasonography can detect the existence of the fetus after a period of 25 days.

Sometimes the home based pregnancy test may claim that a woman is not pregnant although she is pregnant in reality. This is because such tests require a higher level of HCG whereas medical tests by doctors can determine pregnancy even if the body has a lower level of the hormone. Sometimes repeated tests have to be conducted to get the actual result.

On the other hand sometimes home based pregnancy test may claim that a woman is pregnant in spite of the fact she is not. This may happen when too much time is given to determine the results; in that case moisture may take a toll on the result. Sometimes use of fertility hormones also give a false result of positive pregnancy pregnancy. In cases where there is a delay to watch the results it is recommended that the tests are carried more than once.

In some cases certain cancers may also give false positive results of pregnancy. So it is best to consult a doctor in order to determine pregnancy in a woman.

In early days there were no test strips available for pregnancy but it has been said that urine samples were taken from a woman and was injected into a female rabbit. If the urine contained pregnancy hormone the ovaries of the rabbit got changed. It took a long time before the ovaries of the rabbit changed and finally when they changed the rabbits already died.

But in today's world no rabbits are required.
